'Trusting God to Perfect What Concerns Us'

Dear Friends,

Greetings in the name of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

One night, during the Napoleonic wars, Emperor Napoleon was walking through his soldiers’ camp, ensuring that his men rested after an exhausting day of battle. As he moved quietly among the tents, something unusual caught his eye—a faint light shining from one of the tents. Curious, Napoleon approached and peeked inside. To his surprise, he found a soldier, not sleeping, but sitting at a small table with his head bowed. The soldier had fallen asleep while praying. On the table in front of him was a piece of paper. Out of curiosity, Napoleon glanced at it. The paper listed the soldier’s debts, and at the bottom, the soldier had written: “Who will pay my debts? Who will help me?”

Napoleon, understanding the soldier’s distress, quietly wrote at the bottom of the page: “I will pay,” and signed his name. The emperor then left the tent, allowing the soldier to rest. When the soldier awoke the next morning, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Seeing the Emperor’s signature beneath his plea, he was filled with joy and praised God.

Similarly, we find a powerful example in the Bible through the life of King David. David faced countless struggles and opposition from enemies on every side, yet he placed his trust in God. In Psalm 138:8, David confidently declares: “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me.” David knew that no matter how overwhelming his circumstances were, God was in control. He believed that God would take care of him, and indeed, the Lord did just that. Time and time again, God lifted David’s burdens, fought his battles, guided his steps, and brought him through every difficulty. David’s confidence wasn’t rooted in his own strength or the strength of his armies but in the faithfulness of his God.

In the same way, when we face struggles, uncertainty, or overwhelming burdens, we too can hold on to this same promise: God will perfect what concerns us. He sees our needs, hears our prayers, and just as He did for David, He will work things out for us. It may not always be in the way we expect, but God’s faithfulness never fails. So, let us trust in Him wholeheartedly, for He is the one who carries our burdens, lifts our spirits, and perfects all that concerns us.

This October, on the 4th Sunday at Rivercourt Methodist Church, Hammersmith, we will have a special time of reflection and celebration for Bible Sunday. Let’s gather to remember the power of God's Word, and its ability to transform our lives and shape our mission in the world. Moreover, this is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to living out the truth of Scripture and sharing God’s love with those around us. May this special Sunday strengthen us in our faith and deepen our commitment to God’s Word.

May God bless you all.

In Christ's love,
Revd. Prasad Vasanthakumar
Minister, London Tamil Christian Congregation
